ABOUT US
The Birkbeck Computer Science Society (BBK CSS) provides a community for students to learn, grow, and connect. We aim to make our events as accessible as possible, and welcome students from all disciplines and levels - no previous experience in maths or programming is necessary. In our previous year, we had over 130 members from fields such as Business and Management, Philosophy, Bioinformatics, Data Science and Computing at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
To take part in BBK CSS's activities and events, you must be a registered member. This not only helps us manage resources and monitor engagement, but depending on our membership size, we may also be eligible for further funding.
We plan to offer a variety of activities and events, both online and in-person, including:
- Social events: We have multiple socials each term so that you can get to know your fellow members! We will have a mixture of drinks mixers in the SU bar and dry events such as networking and games nights.
- Careers talks: We host careers events to help students understand the different roles within tech, what it's like to do those jobs, and what skills you'll need to get your foot in the door and progress your career.
- Skills and coding workshops: We run workshops to help students further their skills and confidence in technical topics ranging from database development and data analysis to machine learning and artificial intelligence. We also run workshops that are purely for fun, such as building Pong or chess games in Python.
- Peer learning groups: We will facilitate peer learning groups where students can work together on projects and develop skills in areas of shared interest.
- Field trips: We'll organise trips to museums and exhibitions, such as the National Museum of Computing and Bletchley Park.
- Mini hackathons: We also aim to host our first-ever hackathon this year! Further information will be available soon.
We also have a dedicated MS Teams site and Whatsapp group so you can easily stay in touch with other members, and we also share related events and opportunities with members that are offered by other groups and organisations.
As well as having the opportunity to attend events and meet other students, as a member, you can also get involved in the running of the society by contributing ideas or helping deliver events, helping ensure you get the most out of your time at Birkbeck!
We hope you consider joining our society. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch!
SU SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP FEE
We charge a very small membership fee to help fund the group's activity. This is heavily subsidised by Students' Union funding, as we continue to make extra-curricular activity at Birkbeck as accessible as possible - as it should be! If you are a student from another UoL institution, Birkbeck alumni, staff member or guest, we ask you contribute a slightly larger amount to ensure a fair and transparent deal for Birkbeck students and to keep groups affordable and sustainable.
