Birkbeck Students’ Union Statement of Solidarity; regarding ongoing U.K. riots inciting racism, prejudice and violence.

As the Birkbeck Students' Union, we stand united in our commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and supportive community for all students, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or religious beliefs. Recent events, have deeply troubled and saddened us, particularly the ongoing riots targeting foreigners and the rise in Islamophobic, antisemitic and other violent sentiments.

We unequivocally condemn any form of violence, hatred, or discrimination. The riots targeting foreign and non-foreign nationals are a direct assault on the values of diversity and mutual respect that we hold dear. Such actions not only harm individuals but also erode the fabric of our community, fostering fear and division instead of understanding and unity.

Furthermore, the rise in Islamophobic, racist and violent rhetoric and actions is equally alarming. Any and or all forms of racism, including all forms of prejudice, has no place in our society or our campus. We stand with all our students, staff, and community members against these injustices.

Our university is where people from all walks of life come together to learn, grow, and share ideas. We strengthen our community by embracing our differences, not through fear or hatred.

We urge all members of the Birkbeck community to reject these divisive actions and to come together in solidarity. Let us continue to support one another, educate ourselves on the harms of racism, and prejudice and work collectively towards a more inclusive and just campus environment.

To those affected by these events, please know that you are not alone. The Students' Union is here to support you, and we encourage anyone in need of assistance to contact our services.
