As the new academic year begins, a sense of renewal and opportunity sweeps across the campus. Amid the usual flurry of activity, a new initiative has taken root, focused on spreading positivity, fostering connections, and promoting a culture of kindness within the university community. Led by William Sarenden, our Chairman & Education Lead, the Positive Messaging Initiative aims to transform empty notice boards into spaces of empowerment, encourage dialogue between different groups, and uplift everyone through simple yet meaningful acts of kindness.

The Power of Kindness: Why It Matters Now More Than Ever

With the start of a new academic year, students face fresh challenges, whether navigating the complexities of university life, dealing with academic pressures, or simply finding their place in a bustling community. At such times, small gestures of kindness can make a big impact. The Positive Messaging Initiative was created with the belief that spreading positive messages throughout campus can inspire a sense of belonging and well-being and promote a culture of compassion. In a world where negativity can sometimes dominate, this initiative hopes to serve as a reminder of the importance of kindness to others and ourselves.

A Response to the Need for Change

William writes: "University life can be tough. Whether you’re a first-year student finding your way or in your final stretch trying to juggle responsibilities and stress, we could all use a little kindness. I wanted to create something that could be a constant source of encouragement and connection on campus, something that might brighten someone’s day when they least expect it. And so, I started this initiative to spread positivity, foster a sense of community, and, hopefully, make our campus a warmer, more welcoming place."

The inspiration for the initiative came from the realisation that many notice boards around campus were bare, missing out on the potential to deliver uplifting, empowering messages.  The beginning of the academic year always feels like a fresh start, full of possibilities, so they thought, "Why not fill these spaces with something that spreads kindness?" That’s when the idea for the Positive Messaging Initiative was born.

A Multi-Faceted Campaign for Everyone

The Positive Messaging Initiative consists of several key elements, each designed to engage the community in different ways:

  • Empowering Quotes from Students and Alumni: The campaign has collected and displayed quotes from current students and alums of the university, showcasing their wisdom, experiences, and words of encouragement. These posters have been placed around high-traffic areas on campus, serving as daily reminders of positivity and empowerment. Each quote reflects the diversity of experiences within the university, and together, they form a tapestry of kindness that stretches across generations of the student body.
  • Positive Messaging Walls: Several interactive "Positive Messaging Walls" have been set up in key locations. These boards invite students, staff, and other community members to write their own kind messages, words of encouragement, or even anonymous notes of gratitude. These walls have quickly become popular spots where students can pause during their busy day, read something uplifting, or contribute their own positive thoughts to uplift others.
  • Building Bridges Between Communities: One of the most important goals of the initiative is to foster conversations between different communities on campus. Whether it’s through the quotes, the messaging walls, or planned community events, the initiative seeks to encourage students who might not typically interact to engage with one another. "We want people to talk about the things we have in common and be open to hearing new perspectives. This campaign isn’t just about putting up posters. It’s about creating opportunities for connection," William explains.
  • The initiative also focuses on reaching out to students who may not normally engage with these efforts. "University life can be overwhelming, especially for those who feel they are on the margins. We hope this campaign makes everyone feel seen and valued and reminds them that they are a part of this community."

An Invitation to All

The Positive Messaging Initiative invites all university members to participate by reading a quote, leaving a kind message, or starting a conversation with someone new. As the campaign grows, it hopes to create a ripple effect of kindness and positivity that extends beyond the campus and into the wider world.

In an environment where stress and uncertainty can sometimes overshadow optimism, this initiative is a much-needed reminder of the power of small acts of kindness and the strength of the community. With its simple yet profound approach, the Positive Messaging Initiative makes a meaningful difference, one positive note at a time.

"Kindness is contagious—let’s spread it!”
