Join Us as a Volunteer Lay Trustee

Birkbeck Students' Union is looking for one exceptional individuals to join our Board of Trustees as volunteer Lay Trustees. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the student experience at Birkbeck, guiding our strategic direction and ensuring we continue to support and enrich the lives of our diverse student body.

Role Overview: As a Lay Trustee, you will attend and actively participate in five Board of Trustee Meetings and five Finance & Audit Committee meetings per year. Your strategic oversight and governance will help ensure the Students' Union operates in line with its mission, values, and legal obligations. You will provide guidance and insight based on your expertise in one of the following areas Cybersecurity; Fundraising; Legal; and Human Resources (HR).

Student Trustees (x2) (voluntary) 

Join Us as a Student Trustee

The SU is looking for one undergraduate and one postgraduate student to join as a student trustee for one year. These roles have the purpose of bringing the undergraduate/post graduate experience to our board/committees. 

This role has a real impact on how the union runs, which will in turn affect the student body.  

Skills needed:  

  • The ability to read and review papers.  

  • To give your opinions in a constructive manner.  

  • Be vocal and ask questions.  

  • Put what’s best for the union and the student body first.  

  • Commitment and reliability.  

Roles and Responsibilities:  

  • Contributing to the strategic leadership of a registered charity.  

  • Ensuring BBKSU is operating in the best interests of a registered charity.  

  • Monitoring BBKSU’s progress against strategic aims and objectives.  

  • Monitoring the financial performance of BBKSU to ensure it remains financially secure and accountable.  

  • Monitoring the performance of officers and holding them to account.  

  •  Attend the Board of Trustee and Finance & Audit Committee meetings. 

  • Participate in the meetings, discussions or debate.
