The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Sabbatical Officer is a pivotal role within the Birkbeck Students’ Union, dedicated to advocating for students from marginalized and underrepresented groups. As the EDI Officer, you’ll lead initiatives that promote inclusion, respect, and social justice across the university while amplifying the voices of those who need it most.

Purpose of the Role

As the EDI Sabbatical Officer, you will:

  • Be the primary advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion students on campus.
  • Organize campaigns, events, and activities to educate and engage students on EDI issues.
  • Work with University leadership to influence policies and practices that promote inclusion.
  • Represent the student body at University committees, Academic Panels, and other key forums.
  • Potentially serve as a Governor at Birkbeck University, depending on voting outcomes.

Main Responsibilities

  • Representation: Act as the voice of underrepresented students, ensuring their needs are addressed.
  • Campaigning: Lead efforts to raise awareness of EDI issues and foster an inclusive environment.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with the EDI Network and external partners to develop impactful initiatives.
  • Community Building: Create opportunities for students to connect, network, and engage with Union activities.
  • Governance: Contribute to the Union’s strategic decisions as a Trustee.

Eligibility

  • Must be a current Birkbeck student at the time of the election.

Time Commitment

  • 21 hours per week (adjustable to 20 hours for international students on visas).
