Video Format is Mandatory for Manifesto Submissions in 2025

This year, we have introduced a video-only format for manifesto submissions to ensure a more transparent, engaging, and accessible electoral process. Here's why:

  1. Video allows candidates to connect with voters more personally and effectively, making their message more impactful than text alone.

  2. Videos make manifestos accessible to a wider audience, including those who may find it challenging to read lengthy documents.

  3. A video format ensures voters hear directly from the candidates, showcasing their communication skills, passion, and commitment.

  4. Standardising the format across all candidates ensures fairness and clarity in how manifestos are presented to the public.

  5. This shift reflects modern communication trends, embracing technology to enhance the democratic process.

Mandatory Submission Policy
Candidates who fail to submit their video manifesto by the deadline will be withdrawn from the election. This policy ensures accountability and equal opportunity for all participants.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adopting this progressive approach to democracy.

Guidelines for video submission for elected officer roles:

To apply for an elected officer position in the Student Union, you are required to submit a short video that will help your fellow students understand who you are and what you stand for. Please follow these guidelines to ensure your video meets the requirements:

1. Video Length:

  • Maximum Duration: Your video should not exceed 1 minute in length.

  • Be concise: Make sure you cover everything you need to in that short time!

2. Content:

Your video must include the following key elements:

  • Introduction:

  • Start with a clear introduction stating your name and the position you're applying for.

  • Your Three Key Changes:

  • Highlight three things you want to change or improve if elected.

  • For each point, explain why it's important and how you plan to make a difference.

  • These could relate to areas like student life, campus facilities, academic support, events, or any other important aspect of student experience.

  • Why Students Should Vote for You:

  • Conclude with a strong reason why your fellow students should vote for you, showing your passion, leadership, and vision.

3. Filming Tips:

  • Lighting: Ensure you are in a well-lit space so that you’re clearly visible. Natural light or bright, steady lighting works best.

  • Sound: Record in a quiet environment to avoid background noise.

  • Camera Position: Hold the camera steady and make sure it’s at eye level.

4. Editing:

  • Simple Editing: Feel free to use basic editing software to enhance your video. You can edit within your phone’s software or use free apps like CapCut, InShot, or any other free video editor you’re comfortable with.

  • Keep it Clean: Avoid over-complicated effects—your message should remain the focus.

  • Titles & Text: You may add text for emphasis, such as your name, position, and your key points, but make sure they don’t clutter the screen.

5. File Submission:

  • Ensure your video is in a common format (such as MP4).

  • Submit the video by the deadline (10th February 2025 at 10am).
