The Welfare Sabbatical Officer is a vital role within the Birkbeck Students’ Union, responsible for campaigning on key issues affecting student welfare, such as housing, mental health, and financial hardship. This role allows you to work directly with students, the University, and external partners to create a positive and impactful student experience.
Purpose of the Role
As Welfare Sabbatical Officer, you will:
- Be the face of the Students’ Union and a key representative for Birkbeck students.
- Campaign on issues affecting student welfare and lobby for meaningful change.
- Elevate the student voice at University committees and leadership meetings.
- Build a sense of community by organizing events and initiatives that bring students together.
- Serve as a Trustee of the Students’ Union, helping to oversee its activities, finances, and strategy.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Representation: Collect student feedback and represent their views to the University.
- Campaigning: Run campaigns, events, and activities to enhance the student experience.
- Collaboration: Work closely with University leadership to ensure their initiatives align with student needs.
- Governance: Serve as a Governor of Birkbeck University, contributing to key decisions*.
- Accountability: Provide termly reports to Student Parliament and the Trustee Board.
Eligibility
- Must be a current Birkbeck student at the time of the election.

Time Commitment
- 21 hours per week (adjustable to 20 hours for international students on visas).
